Irish dairy and food company Glanbia has said it is in advanced negotiations to build a US$170m cheese and whey production facility in the US.

The company said it is in talks with Dairy Farmers of America and Select Milk Producers regarding the construction of the facility in western Texas or New Mexico.

The facility would process more than one billion litres of milk each year and would produce 115,000 tonnes of cheese and 7,500 tonnes of whey, reported Reuters.

Glanbia said it would own 50% of the new facility, while the other 50% is owned by DFA and Select. The facility would involve an investment of $35m in cash by Glanbia and a total of $35m from DFA and Select.
