The Irish seafood processing industry has been awarded an EUR9m (US$9.8m) development grant to boost its supply of "added-value" products, the country's government has announced.

Eighteen seafood processing companies are to benefit from the grant, which has been co-funded by the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine, the European Fisheries Fund and taken in conjunction with private sector investment.

The projects are expected to deliver 145 jobs and EUR41m in additional sales by 2017, Dublin said.

Simon Coveney, Ireland's Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, said the investment will "put the required technology, infrastructure and standards in place to allow these businesses develop added-value seafood products that are in great demand on the global market".
