There is no time during pregnancy when nutrition is not important, and many women devote more thought to their diet when pregnant than at any other time during their lives. Many take dietary supplements to ensure they fulfil the latest nutritional recommendations. A new study to emerge in Israel has highlighted the importance of vitamin B12.

A report in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine describes 14 women suffering from apparent infertility or after a series of miscarriages. They were all deficient in vitamin B12, a vitamin which is vital in ovulation but also plays an important role in the development of the nervous system and new tissue.

The study, which was carried out by Dr Michael Bennett of Ha’Emek Medical Centre in Afula, near Nazareth, saw ten of the women conceive after beginning vitamin treatment, leading Bennett to the conclusion that, for some women, correcting vitamin B12 deficiency can rapidly lead to a normal pregnancy.
