Italian pasta multinational Barilla is reported to be developing elaborate expansion plans at home and abroad that foresees its entry to global fastfood business – opening or franchising a ‘spaghetteria’ chain serving fast pasta similar to the burgers and fried chicken now dominating the market.

The Italian company (annual sales €2.2bn) may even link up with other firms established in the fastfood business and specialised retail shops, among them Italian Autogrill and German Kamps, according to Italian business daily Il Sole 24 Ore today [Thursday].


Another project is believed to involve equipping already established restaurants with new material for faster cooking of pasta products in possible partnership with Italian Zanussi.


Barilla’s development plans may also involve distributing non-Barilla Italian products to markets with high potential for typical Italian cuisine such as the US, Europe and Japan.
