French produce group Bonduelle is to build a salads plant in Italy – on the exact site of a facility destroyed by fire last year.

Bonduelle has announced plans to construct a factory in Sao Paolo d’Argon, in the province of Bergamo.

The facility, with a capacity of 20,000 tonnes, will be located on the site of a previous plant destroyed by fire in February last year.

The EUR20m (US$28.7m) factory is set to get up and running in the spring of 2011, employing 200 people, and leading to the closure of another site in Costa di Mezzate Lallio. Staff will be transferred to the Sao Paolo site.

Bonduelle commands 40% of Italy’s salads market, which has seen consumption slow in the last year.
