The process, which removes some of the serum, allows milk to last longer than traditional fresh milk. The treated product does not however last as long as UHT milk, which is not classified as fresh.

Farm Minister Giovanni Alemanno announced the approval at a news conference, at which he said that milk treated with microfiltration will be subject to strict labelling rules to enable consumers to choose between “fresh traditional milk” or “fresh microfiltrated milk”.
