Senior officials of beleaguered Italian dairy giant Parmalat were allowed to leave prison last Friday to spend Easter under house arrest instead. They are expected to remain under house arrest until their trial begins.

Calisto Tanzi, Fausto Tonna and Luciano Del Soldato left prison Friday evening after a judge decided there was little risk of their absconding or reoffending. They have been in jail since late December when an accounting scandal at Parmalat emerged.


The men are reported by AP to have admitted their involvement in the scandal, which dates back over more than ten years. Prosecutors in Milan hope to put 29 people on trial in connection with the market-rigging and fraud case.


The company is now the focus of a desperate turnaround plan being masterminded by a new management team.
