The company recently posted a 3% fall in same-store sales for May, compared to its own forecast of a 1% year-on-year decline.

Daiei remodelled several of its smaller stores in the last financial year, helping to keep food sales from declining. Whereas sales of apparel and households goods fell year-on-year in May, food sales remained almost unchanged.

Now the company plans to remodel 18 larger stores with annual sales of up to ¥10bn (US$91.6m). The stores will be divided into three groups, based on their locations, which will determine the range of products stocked in each store, reported the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
