A Japanese department store has parted with ¥300,000 (US$2,338) for the first two locally grown melons of the season.

Based in Sapporo, the store bid for the fruit at a local market, explaining that it hoped to send the message out to potential shoppers that it deals with only the best quality fruit and vegetables.

It paid ¥150,000 each for the melons, saying that they are imbibed with “happiness and luck”, being the first grown.
