The fraud, carried out by the former heads of three regional sales offices at the meat packing giant, related to gaining subsidies intended to bolster the domestic meat industry after the outbreak of mad cow disease (BSE) in the country last year. The ministry says that the men relabelled 14.2 tonnes of imported meat as domestic to gain the subsidies.

According to a report in the Financial Times, Nippon Food is the third company at the focus of criminal complaints from the ministry. The other two shamed companies are the now-dissolved Snow Brand Foods and Nippon Shokuhin.
