The agricultural ministry was quoted yesterday [Monday] as saying it would press the charges relating to an “extremely planned, malignant act”.
The company abused a government buyback scheme to assist farmers and processors struggling in the aftermath of last September’s outbreak of foot and mouth disease. Nippon Shokuhin received subsidies for foreign beef that it deliberately labelled as domestic in order to receive the financial assistance.
According to the farm ministry’s investigation, Nippon Shokuhin submitted six tons of domestic beef carrying the same identification number as imported tendons in order to beat January’s spot inspection by Agriculture & Livestock Industry Corp., an affiliate of the ministry.
