Man’s best friend is to get a new treat – canine ice cream is being launched in Japan.

Akagi Nyugyo, a Japanese maker of ice cream for humans, has launched ‘Doggy’s Ice Cream’ designed with canine health in mind. The ice cream is yoghurt-flavoured and has a reduced content of milk sugar or lactose, which is not suitable for dogs’ digestive systems.

The ice cream was developed in consultuation with veterinarians, reported Agence France Presse. “It is a human-grade ice cream but with special attention paid to the health of dogs,” Akagi marketing official Yasuyuki Obara said.

The product contains lactobacillus fibre but no sucrose. It has been suggested that consumers trying to watch their weight may like to tuck in alongside their canine friends.

Sales started in July only for online shoppers with the ice cream priced at ¥1,800 (US$15) for 18 110-millimetre (3.3-ounce) cups. The ice cream is delivered by an express parcel delivery service.
