Donald Nordeng, president of Qai Japan, an eponymous subsidiary of the US organic organisation, said that there are still problems tracing cattle as they move around Japan. Furthermore, Nordeng was highly critical of the government’s control of cattle feed containing meat and bone meal (MBM). MBM has been tagged as the reason for Japan’s mad cow outbreak, and Nordeng believes proper controls on the potentially damaging feedstuff are inadequate.
In France meanwhile, the president of French labelling body Ecocert, William Vidal, told Agence France Presse that “to say there were only three cases [of BSE] is a joke”. Vidal commented that efforts by the Japanese government to detect more cases had been “woefully inadequate”.
