Ishiya Co. is to suspend all production for four days following allegations that the company has breached Japanese food safety  laws. The suspension will cost the company Y30m (US$0.26m) a day, it was reported.

Local reports said that the company, which produces “Shiroi Koibito,” or White Lovers, chocolate products, has also announced a recall after it became apparent it had been repackaging unsold chocolate with false expiration dates.


At a press conference Michiyuki Ito, a board member of the firm, admitted he had allowed the repackaging, according to Jiji Press.


Furthermore, the company was said to have admitted that it is highly likely that ice cream products containing coliform bacteria were shipped without sanitary tests.


The company was raided twice this week by food safety officials.
