The move comes as a response to the increasing focus on thrift retailing from Japan’s top supermarkets.
Seven & I Holdings Co. recently confirmed its intention to extend the new The Price discount supermarket format, while Lawson said it will consolidate the activities of its Ninety-nine Plus and Value Lawson subsidiaries.
As competition with bigger rivals heats up, Izumiya said it was important supermarkets in its core Kansai region came together to exercise their bargaining power and extract better deals from suppliers.
To this end, Izumiya has made an alliance with Uny and other smaller retailers in the region.

By GlobalDataAnnouncing the deal, Izumiya president Norio Nakashin said the group had implemented a three-year plan to promote reform, address restructuring costs, establish the new discount policy and further develop its proprietary product lines.
