Over 150 people including local schoolchildren were called in to harvest premium japonica rice that has been growing atop a 45-metre-high building at the Roppongi business and shopping district. The 130-square-metre area produced over 40 kilograms of mochi rice.


Tokyo has an ordinance that decrees all buildings must devote 20% of their rooftops to greenery. The Roppongi Hills housing and business complex has decided to go one step further and create farms on its roofs.
