Popular diet foods are not always what they might seem, and a public service corporation has concluded that the labelling on some products is so inaccurate that the products should be banned.

Well-known diet food products manufactured by 15 companies in Tokyo and Yokohama selected by the Japan Leisure Sports Association were investigated by officials of Japan Food Research Laboratories. The officials looked at water content, protein and fats in nine of these products, and found that seven failed to live up to their labelling. One product mis-stated its nutritional content by over 20%, reported the Asahi Shimbun.

Another case found that the doctor who had supposedly endorsed a product, did not in fact exist.

Officials from the Japan Leisure Sports Association this week asked the Fair Trade Commission to suspend the sale of these products as they are in contravention of labelling laws.

“It was the first time we had decided to conduct an analysis of ingredients. Now we know how serious the problem is,’” said Akimasa Kojima, secretary-general of the Association.
