The Japan Ham & Sausage Processors Cooperative Association (JHSPCA) yesterday [Wednesday] named Kenichi Ito, president of Itoham Foods and deputy director of JHSPCA, as its new chief.
The appointment was made to replace disgraced Yoshinori Okoso; the former chairman of Nippon Meat Packers, who stepped down from both roles after his role in a labelling scam designed to abuse the government’s BSE domestic beef buyback programme was revealed
The JHSPCA, which received some of the mislabelled beef under the programme, has undergone a major management reshuffle following the labelling scam. Katsuo Ishihama, the Association’s senior MD, who instructed Nippon Meat to incinerate the beef, also resigned yesterday.
According to a story in the Nikkei Report, Ito has vowed: “I would like to ensure the transparency of the association from the viewpoint of consumers and make the association more open.”
