Meiji has announced plans to increase production capacity for its probiotic yoghurt brands in order to support increased sales volumes.

The company said that it will invest JPY6.8bn (US$49m) in the coming year to upgrade its capacity for drinking yoghurt alongside a JPY1.4bn investment to increase production of pot yoghurt. Meiji will increase its capacity for both pot and drinkable yoghurt by 1.3 times current levels.

The company also revealed it will introduce two additions to its Meiji Yogurt R-1 line-up to expand the brand: Meiji Yogurt R-1 Drink Low Sugar/Low Calorie and o Meiji Yogurt R-1
Low Fat.

Meiji will continue aggressive investments and R&D in the field of Probiotics Yogurt in order to live up to the support and brand loyalty our customers have shown us,” the company said.

Meiji increased its sales of probiotic yoghurt by 30% in 2013, when sales rose to JPY74.3bn. The company has targeted probiotic sales of JPY81.2bn in 2014 and Meiji said that its investments in production and innovation will support growth.
