Metro is to expand its cash-and-carry operations in Japan with the opening of eight new stores in and around Tokyo.
The German retail giant said this morning (22 October) said the eight “wholesale centres” would be opened during the next two years. Each outlet will cost around EUR20m (US$28.4m), Metro said.
“We analyzed the sophisticated Japanese market and consumption habits very thoroughly and see a great potential for the wholesale business of METRO Cash & Carry,” said James Scott, regional operating officer for Metro Cash & Carry Asia.
The company already runs three centres in Japan, in Chiba, Angyo and Tamasakai.
“The Japanese customer is probably the most sophisticated and demanding consumer in the world when it comes down to food quality and freshness”, Scott added. “Metro Cash & Carry is not just providing products to its commercial customers, but solutions to improve their businesses and to strengthen their competitiveness.”
