Jiro Kawasaki, the Japanese minister for Health, Labour and Welfare, said today (20 June) that the government will inspect all US shipments of beef, if the trade embargo is lifted.
The Japanese Government lifted a two-year-ban on US beef that had been imposed due to fears of mad cow disease in January, only to swiftly reinstate trade restrictions after a prohibited cut of meat was found in a shipment of veal from the US.
According to a Kyodo News report, Kawasaki’s comments were made after a cabinet meeting where the issue was supposedly discussed.
