The Tokyo-based company said its JPY800m (US$8.2m) new factory would specialise in thick winter style udon noodles and also thinner somen noodles, which are popular with Japanese consumers in the summer months as they are often eaten cold.

Known more for its instant stock brands, the company recently purchased noodle producer Fujiwara Seimen to boost sales in Japan’s growing noodle market.

Nagatanien’s sales of noodles last fiscal year totaled around JPY6.5bn.
