Japanese scientists have already identified yoghurt as a super functional food now they say it has one more added benefit – as a bad breath zapper.

Working with a Japanese yoghurt manufacturer, who partly funded the study, researchers at Tsurumi University, Yokohama, claim that eating natural yoghurt may kill the bacteria that cause bad breath.

Volunteers were given yoghurt to eat twice a day and after six weeks the researchers found the amount of the rouge ingredient behind halitosis – hydrogen sulfide produced by bacteria on the back of the tongue – had decreased in 80% of the volunteers. Yoghurt also reduced plaque and gingivitis significantly in the subjects, they said.
