Relatives of 20 victims of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), the human form of BSE, have reached an out of court compensation settlement with the Japanese government and the pharmaceutical firms implicated in the spread of the fatal disease through infected transplant operations.

According to local newspaper reports, the relatives accepted an apology and US$8.7m yesterday [Monday].
The out of court settlement, which was signed by all parties, said: “The Health, Labor and Welfare Minister and the companies recognise their responsibility and regret what happened.”
