Japanese retailer and Wal-Mart affiliate Seiyu has reportedly said it may open a number of large stores under the Wal-Mart banner next year in order to boost sales.

US-based Wal-Mart reportedly plans to make Seiyu a subsidiary at the end of this year using an option to increase its 42.4% stake to 50.1%.

One option the struggling Japanese retailer is considering to boost its presence is to use the Wal-Mart name.

“For many parts of Japan, the name Seiyu is a familiar presence to our customers,” a Seiyu spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying. “We don’t know if having the Wal-Mart name would boost our image. The ultimate decision will be decided from the customers’ point of view.”
