Tokyo-based Japan Information System Co claims that its 10cm-long, wirelessly readable tag will, besides recording standard data such as production and distribution, also keep a record of a product’s temperature.

Using a thermo sensor in the tag’s long antenna the special IC chip will allow food processors, shippers and retailers to instantly check on boxed perishables for history of any temperature fluctuations. Priced at around ¥750 (US$6.75) each, the company plans to market the tags by the end of this year.
