Starbucks Coffee Japan has said it plans to introduce a line of hot food items at outlets across the country next month, as it seeks to boost sales.

The company increased the range of its dessert offering in the summer, which helped offset lower sales of cold drinks due to unseasonably cool weather.

Increased focus on its food operations has meant the chain does not expect to have to lower its earnings guidance, company spokeswoman Naho Yohda told Dow Jones Newswires.

From 8 October Starbucks Japan will offer food items such as hot apple pie and croque monsieurs at all of its stores with eat-in areas.

Food items currently account for 16% of the company’s sales revenue, but Starbucks Japan hopes to increase this to 20% over the midterm, Yohda said.
