Agriculture minister Yoshiyuki Kamei told his US counterpart Ann Veneman that an early lifting of the ban, imposed on fears over BSE in the US, was “desirable”. Japan was one of the first of more than 30 importing countries to impose a ban in shipments of beef from the US after the country said before Christmas that it was investigating its first case of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease).

Veneman confirmed that a delegation from the US would go to Japan next week to discuss the matter.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda said separately that if the safety of US beef is assured, “it is quite natural to resume imports as soon as possible,” reported AFP.
