Representatives of the Japanese and US governments have held a consultation in Tokyo aimed at resolving the current trade row over Japan’s ban on imports of US beef.

During the consultation, the two governments agreed to actively engage in consultations, including a working group, aimed at resolving the issue.


At the same time, the two sides undertook to pursue domestic discussions and make an effort to reach a final conclusion by sometime around this summer on the resumption of the importation of both American and Japanese beef.


The working group will be composed of experts and working-level government officials and will discuss technical items such as BSE testing, surveillance, feed ban implementation and definition of Specified Risk Materials.


Japan was one of several countries to ban imports of US beef following the detection of a case of BSE in a cow in Washington state in December.
