Hampton Creek has asserted it is “right” in labelling its eggless condiment as a mayonnaise following a lawsuit from Unilever which claims the Just Mayo product is a fraud and damaging to the sector.
The Hellmann’s-maker filed a lawsuit against Hampton Creek on 3 October at the US District Court of New Jersey. It stated Hampton Creek used a “literally-false name”, given the mayonnaise contains no egg, and that its “unsubstantiated superiority claims have already caused consumer deception and serious, irreparable harm to Unilever and to the product category”. It also added Just Mayo is “stealing market share from Hellmann’s”.
Just Mayo is marketed by Hampton Creek as an affordable, “better-for-you” product, made using organic and non-GMO ingredients.
In an email to just-food late last night (10 November), CEO of Hampton Creek, Josh Tetrick, said the company believed it was “on the right side of the law, taste, and where the world is going.”
Tetrick added: “We look forward to hopefully partnering with Unilever on all of these one day to make a difference in food for everyone.”
