US private label food maker Karlin Foods has agreed to pay out US$825,000 in a class action lawsuit in Florida over 'all natural' levels on its cornstarch.
The plaintiff, Amber Teufel, last August, claimed the product packaging on its cornstarch "sold exclusively at Wal-Mart" was "false and deceptive in that it led purchasers to believe the product was all natural when in fact it included genetically modified organisms".
In the court filing, Karlin said it "strongly denied" the plaintiff's allegations and claims.
The company has agreed that within 60 calendar days after the final ruling it will ensure its product is "no longer being falsely represented to the public as being all natural" and agrees it will obtain certification from suppliers to ensure its products are all natural before making such claims.
