US cheese maker Karoun Dairies has recalled its cheeses on the back of listeria concerns.

The firm said in a statement that to date none of its products had tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes "but in view of the association with listeriosis cases Karoun Dairies Inc. is initiating a voluntary recall in the interest of protecting public health".

The firm said it was made aware of a possible association of their cheese products with several recent cases of listeriosis by the US Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and had ceased distribution of a number of cheeses including the brands: Karoun, Arz, Gopi, Queso Del Valle, Central Valley Creamery, Gopi, and Yanni.

According to the CDC, 24 cases of listeria linked to soft cheeses had been filed by 18 September including one death, across nine US states since August 2010.

"The investigation has not conclusively identified the source of this outbreak, but most ill people interviewed reported eating soft cheese before becoming ill. This investigation is ongoing," the CDC said in a statement on its website.
