Within the framework of a project financed by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR), two salt producers and 12 flour millers have reached an agreement with the Health Ministry to start producing fortified bread and salt. Special equipment is being installed by the US company American Ingredients in two flour milling plants, with more to follow by the end of September.

The JFPR has made US$904,000 available for the project. In turn, the local producers taking part in the project have agreed not to raise prices linked to the fortified products.

Some 27% of women of childbearing of age in Kazakhstan suffer from iron-deficient anaemia.
