UK poultry producer Kelly Turkeys plans to open a production site in Albemarle County, Virginia, through its local unit Kelly Turkey USA.

The site, Kelly's first US facility, will process 10,000 turkeys annually, creating 33 jobs. Kelly is known for its unique breed of turkey – KellyBronze turkey – and the company will bring the same brand and production methods to Virginia-grown turkeys.

"The artisan quality of the KellyBronze turkey fits in perfectly with the local food movement that is so strong in this area," said Judd Culver, owner of Kelly Turkeys USA. "The positive feedback we have earned from our customers for our Thanksgiving and Christmas KellyBronze turkeys has been remarkable."

Kellys Turkeys is investing US$1.4m in the facility. The company is partnering with Virginia's Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Fund in the project. The Find will provide a $29,000 grant and Albemarle County will provide a $29,000 cash match.
