The slaughterhouses, Delsbo Slakteri and Jämtlandsgården Livsmedel, are owned by Mattias Norell and Thomas Gill through their jointly owned company Delsbo Kött.

In a statement, Swedish agri-food co-op Lantmännen described the deal as a move to “strengthen” local agriculture and domestic livestock production as meeting rising demand for Swedish meat will require investment.

Lars Appelqvist, the CEO of Scan Sweden, added: “We are strengthening our production and slaughtering capacity in Norrland and creating better opportunities to grow together with our suppliers in a part of the country with particularly good conditions for increased Swedish meat production.”

Both sites specialise in the slaughter of beef and lamb. Combined, the two operations generate about Skr190m ($21m) in turnover and employ around 40 people.

Norell and Gill said the companies had worked with Scan Sverige for years and expect the transaction to support capacity and production.

“We now look forward to continuing to work together with them, employees and suppliers to ensure more Swedish meat from northern Sweden on our plates,” they said.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory clearance. Completion is expected in the first half of the year.

Lantmännen operates across several areas including food, crops and seeds, and agricultural machinery.

Within its food operations, key units include Lantmännen Unibake and Lantmännen Cerealia, which market brands include Axa breakfast products, Finn Crisp rye snacks, Gyllenhammars oats and GoGreen vegan products.

Late last year, Lantmännen Unibake snapped up Italian frozen bread manufacturer Panificio San Francesco.

Scan Sverige also acquired the  Swedish charcuterie brand Slaktarkorv, while Unibake purchased Boboli Benelux, a Dutch producer of savoury baked goods.
