Dairy company Rigas Piena Kombinats is planning to raise money from EU structural funds to build a new cheese plant, according to the Baltic Business Weekly.

The company is going to invest €5m (US$6.1m) in the project, said RPK spokesman Martins Langrats.
In order to ensure the planned capacity, the new cheese plant will need additional 40,000 to 45,000 tonnes of milk a year, which may be a great incentive for Latvian farmers to boost production.
RPK is intending to produce both already existing popular kinds of cheese as well as new ones, at the same time paying more attention to the packaging design.
The dairy is hoping to open the new plant in mid-2006, thus increasing the amount of products sold both abroad and domestically, Langrats said.
