"The fire brigade has arrived at the scene and has done the utmost in order to subdue the fire. Unfortunately, the factory has completely been destroyed," Lotus said in a statement.

The factory in Meise produces waffles, mainly for the French and English markets. The waffles for the Belgian market are mainly produced in the Courcelles factory, Lotus added. "We will now take all necessary measures in order to maintain deliveries to the customers," the company said.

CEO Jan Boone commented: "We feel relieved that there are no casualties amongst our employees. However, this day will remain a dark page in the history of Lotus Bakeries."
