The Malaysian Muslim Consumer Association (MMCA) is particularly opposed to imports of raw chicken from China, which it claims has contained traces of a toxic antibiotic that could damage the kidneys.

MMCA secretary general Maamor Osman said China’s slaughtering methods were questionable from a religious point of view, adding: “Our products are cheaper, safer, more halal and easily available. They are on par with imported goods.”

Osman said the ban would support the Kuala Lumpur government’s efforts to urge people to purchase more Malaysian products.
