Family-owned company Mariani markets a range of dried fruits including apricots, raisins and dates, selling them into major US grocers and on Amazon, as well as more than 60 countries worldwide.

Part of Treasure8’s production is moving to Mariani’s main site in Vacaville in California, where the companies will work on the new products.

Asked if the tie-up involved a corporate relationship – such as, for example, including Mariani buying an equity stake in Treasure8 – the dried-fruits group declined to comment.

In a statement, Mariani chairman Mark Mariani said: "With the fourth generation running our family business today and the health of future generations in mind, we're excited to accelerate our innovation journey and embark on a new chapter with Treasure8 that will help extend our global platform into healthy living solutions for people worldwide."

Treasure8, set up in 2012, dehydrates fruits and vegetables without, the firm says, stripping the foods of their nutrients.

Co-CEO Derk Hendriksen said: "Any time we have an opportunity to expand our capabilities, we want to take advantage of it. And this is an enormous one. Mariani is a long-established company with extensive scale and knowledge and it's an honour to team up with them to make a difference in the global food system."

Timothy Childs, Treasure8's founder and fellow co-CEO, added: "Working with Mariani is a key step for us in further accelerating our partnership platform which is critical to scale our nutrition solutions as quickly as we can."
