Japanese food group Maruha Nichiro has reported higher nine-month net income and sales but saw operating profit drop on the cost of raw materials.

The frozen food manufacturer saw net income jump 42.6% to JPY8.79bn (US$74.9m) in the nine months to the end of December as it lapped a year when it incurred costs from a product recall after tests detected the pesticide malathion.

Sales grew 1.4% to JPY667.94bn thanks to its fisheries and aquaculture business, higher revenue from its meat processing arm and improved sales from its overseas operations.

However, Maruha Nichiro said its operating income slid 21.3% to JPY9.78bn amid a “hike” in commodity costs.
