North American frozen food group McCain Foods has confirmed plans to close its plant at Colton, California, with 100 job losses.

Describing the decision as “difficult”, the Canadian company said it will no longer produce its fire roasted, caramelised or sautéed frozen vegetable and fruit products from there.

“At McCain, we value our employees, and as such, the closure of a facility is never an easy decision, especially when it means job losses,” Jeff DeLapp, president for McCain’s North America operations, said.

“All of our employees will be treated fairly and respectfully. We have made and will continue to make significant investments in McCain’s North American business in order to be leaders in our industry and meet the evolving needs of our customers. We remain fully committed to the US market, where our existing production facilities in Idaho, Maine, Nebraska, Washington and Wisconsin will continue unaffected.”

The closing will result in the lay off of approximately 100 employees.

McCain said the decision is based on the long-term viability and needs of the business, as it relates to the products that had been produced at the Colton facility.

“After review, the product mix produced at the Colton facility does not support the changing needs of our portfolio, and the difficult business decision was made to close the plant,” it said.
