McCain Foods, the potato-products giant, is mulling possible “capital investment” in the US state of Idaho.

The Canada-based business, which last week confirmed plans to close a plant in California, has signed a deal over a plot of land in the city of Caldwell.

The agreement followed speculation last summer McCain was looking to build a plant in Caldwell. The company already has a factory 200 miles east in the city of Burley.

“McCain can confirm the purchase and sale agreement between the company and the Urban Renewal Agency of City of Caldwell, completed on February 6th, 2019,” a spokesperson for McCain said yesterday (11 February). “Our relationships and presence in Idaho are long-standing and this agreement gives McCain the opportunity to continue exploring further development options in the region. A potential project is in a preliminary planning stage as we consider where capital investment might occur.”

The closure of the plant in Colton, California, will result in the lay off of approximately 100 employees. Describing the decision as “difficult”, McCain said it will no longer produce its fire roasted, caramelised or sautéed frozen vegetable and fruit products from there.
