Jeronimo Ramos Saenz Pardo, a senior official at the ministry, explained that the new restrictions also include a ban on fishing methods that do not protect immature tuna or other non-commercial species, such as dolphin. Over recent months the accidental capture of unwanted fish has increased, he said.
Authorities have argued that stocks of the fish could be completely undermined within three years if the level of fishing is not controlled now.
