The country’s President Felipe Calderon is aiming to push through fiscal reforms aimed at boosting Mexico’s coffers and accelerating economic growth. A similar plan by his predecessor, however, failed because it included taxes on food and medicine, which alienated the country’s poor.
However, two Mexican newspapers – Milenio and La Jornada – said yesterday (1 April) that finance minister Agustin Carstens has ruled out taxes on food and medicines in the new proposals.
Both newspaper reports predicted that the bill will be put before Congressional committees for discussion by mid-April.
