SIPTU organiser Colm Casserly said: "The announcement that the company is seeking such large-scale redundancies has come as a complete shock to the workforces and their respective communities.

"SIPTU representatives are seeking an urgent meeting with management to ascertain the full ramifications of this announcement. We will be attempting to minimise the number of redundancies to the greatest degree possible."

While the union said 160 jobs were on the line, some Irish reports suggested as many as 222 jobs were at risk. Mondelez was unavailable for comment at time of press.
