Nestle has insisted its manufacturing process "excludes the possibility" of insects existing in a sealed package after a consumer in India claimed to have discovered live insects in Cerelac infant cereal.

The claim comes as Nestle recalls Maggi noodles in India after health regulators alleged the products contained elevated levels of lead – accusations that are denied by the company.

"We are aware that a consumer in Coimbatore has reported finding insects in a pack of our Cerelac Stage 3 Infant Cereal," Nestle's India said in a statement.

"Our manufacturing technology excludes the possibility of insects existing in the sealed package in which this product is sold. We have visited the consumer and shared with him details of our strict food quality and safety procedures, including quality checks at the different stages of our manufacturing process, as well as checks of storage conditions. We believe the consumer was satisfied with the resolution of his complaint," the company continued.

Nestle added it is co-operating with the authorities.
