Beleaguered Dutch retailer Ahold is to cut hundreds of jobs at its Dutch retail chain Albert Heijn, according to reports.

Ahold is to axe jobs at both Albert Heijn headquarters and at its stores, with around 3-4% of the total workforce possibly being laid off, Dow Jones Newswires reported, citing a source close to the company.


A spokesman for the chain, which employs 55,000 people, declined to comment


Ahold is to reveal specific financial information on Albert Heijn for 2000 to 2002 at a shareholders meeting on 4 September. The meeting will also be used to tell investors that in order to improve efficiency at Albert Heijn, job cuts cannot be ruled out, the source said.
