Schuitema said between 50 and 75 stores would be switched to Ahold, the largest retailer in the Netherlands, which is looking to sell its 73% stake in the retailer.

The transfer is part of plans first announced last month, when Ahold said it was in talks to sell the stake to private equity firm CVC.

Meanwhile, Schuitema, which owns the C1000 business, has decided to streamline its distribution network, a move that will lead to the loss of 135 jobs.

Chief executive Bert Roetert said: “The measures announced today are substantial, but we believe necessary for our good position in the Dutch market and further in the future. The planned cooperation with CVC will give us even more opportunities.”
