The authorities plan to set up more checkpoints to stop lorries, which are thought to be spreading the highly contagious bird flu disease.
The number of inspectors will increase in order to make sure that restrictions on transport are being followed, Rob Hageman, spokesman for the General Inspection Service, told Reuters.
“We have indications that the initial spread of the disease is by hitching on people or on transport, that is why we have to be very careful. To control all this we have to stop lorries and that is very labour intensive,” he said.
The number of Dutch farms with confirmed cases of the disease has risen to 153, while 43 others are suspected of being infected, according to an Agriculture Ministry spokeswoman. All confirmed cases are still contained within the central Gelderland province.
