Bioscience company EBI Food Safety has established a Phage Technology Centre in Holland for production of bacteriophages called Listex P100.

EBI’s first batch, against contamination by foodborne disease Listeria Monocytogenes, will be shipped to customers in the EU and US in July.

The discovery of Listeria health scares, mainly in raw and ready-to-eat meat, poultry, seafood and dairy products, has prompted product recalls and financial losses for the food industry, EBI said.

EBI is the first company to have a commercial product on the market to treat infections and kill foodborne bacteria.

Company CEO Mark Offerhaus said: “The establishment of our Phage Technology Centre is a milestone in the history of phage technology. This will reinforce EBI Food Safety’s position as product leader in the field of applied bacteriophage technology and marks a breakthrough in the fight against dangerous bacteria.”
